Taking a Balanced, Proactive Approach to
IT Management

by Rania Kort,
Executive Consultant

Increasingly, companies monitor – even question – the value of IT. Few, however, have established programs that link its performance to business drivers and goals; in fact, most rely on speculation to determine the success of their IT organizations. This “gut feel” approach to the evaluation process often results in the perception – valid or not – that a company’s IT organization neither delivers on schedule nor satisfies expectations of quality and value.

But what, exactly, does it mean to deliver value? “Value” is a nebulous, subjective term – one that can signify something different to every company. Whatever definitions they attach to the word, though, all organizations have one thing in common: They cannot improve value unless they first have a framework from which to base expectations and measurements for the delivery of IT services.

This will determine to a great extent how your company establishes business priorities and deploys business initiatives.

A CIO can be instrumental in bridging the gap between IT and the rest of your organization; he or she can help business units understand how IT’s success affects the entire enterprise. This will reinforce the fact that, because business goals have become so entwined with the delivery of IT services, the IT organization must be involved in the strategic planning process.
