IT Governance

Now that you have achieved critical-to-success status for information technology (IT), your next challenge is to develop measurements and controls that will assure executive management that IT is contributing to corporate objectives.

The task is difficult because other business functions, e.g. Operations, have set high expectations with well-established measures and controls to help executives monitor their performance. Technology performance monitoring and control is a complex process requiring clear definition and acceptance of measurements and procedures. This process of controlling and monitoring information is IT Governance.

IT Governance is the set of processes that bring IT into Enterprise Governance. Before control can be established, structured and repeatable processes with appropriate measures and control must be developed. The IT Governance framework establishes common processes in four domains.

All IT activities can be grouped within one of these four categories. For example, Acquisition & Implementation contains processes such as: identify automated solutions, and acquire and maintain application software. Planning & Organization contains: manage the IT investment, and manage projects. Each process is clearly defined with built in measures and reporting points. The framework defines the relationship between the categories.

It is the definition and execution of processes that facilitates measurement and control – in other words, control of process execution creates IT Governance.

Contact us so we an assist you in planning and implementing IT Governance. We provide procedures, guidelines, facilitation, process design, templates, and training to ensure your success.

The solution is to manage IT assets similar to the way a financial services 'portfolio' is managed. Make decisions, and answer questions, based on an assessment of need, cost, and risk with the objective of generating the most value within an acceptable level of risk, utilizing funds and resources provided by the enterprise.

Fully managed assets enable CIO's and IT managers, LOB presidents, and corporate officers to strategically align IT with business objectives. Answering the type of questions listed above becomes an objective rather than a subjective exercise - adding credibility and respect to IT decision makers.
