Accountability Overview
Proactive Accountability is the organizational system required in the 21st century. However, this system requires more than a process and an approach to identifying who is accountable for what. It also requires conditions of execution to create alignment and collaboration so the organization and the individuals in it can all succeed.
Setting people up to succeed is a guaranteed way to build an organization of employees that not only accept accountability for organizational results, but put all effort forward to fulfill that accountability.
Move away from Reactive Accountability
Does your organization have a reactive accountability culture? If so, you will probably recognize these behaviors:
- Leaders looking for and examining mistakes made during execution
- The blame game dominating in the organization.
- A wait and see commitment attitude - "If it looks like the result will be positive I'll commit, if not I'll pass the buck".
- A disempowered organization attempting to achieve un-achievable goals.
- Individuals doing anything they can to achieve "their" results with no regard to the organizational impact.
When an organization's culture is one of reactive accountability the result is an organization filled with individuals that commit after the result is produced. If it is positive they will say they were committed. If negative, they will look for excuses to demonstrate they never accepted the commitment. This is not an approach that produces a culture of success
Proactive Accountability - The Path to a Culture of Success
Given the organizational paradigm of cross functional teams, leaders need an accountability model to help their organizations achieve success.
The Martin Training Associates Accountability Model re-positions the organization to focus on the main part of the any desired result - Commitment. If an individual is committed to the organization, team and goal more often then not they will focus all their energy on ensuring the goal is achieved, the team is a success and the organization delivers it's strategy. This is the first step in building a culture of success.
The goal of Proactive Accountability is to decide [up front ] what an individual will accept accountability for and then taking action to produce the result. In the proactive accountability model there is no excuse for not fulfilling your accountability. There may be reasons why the accountability wasn’t met. (Discovered during the process of Lessons Learned) but since the commitment to the accountability was made up front, individuals know they won’t be able to pass the buck if the accountability is not fulfilled. This positions them to accept accountability for things they will be able to achieve.
